It’s rumoured that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning parts one and two will serve as a farewell for Tom Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt. If this is indeed the case, this first volume will tell some practical stories that will be shown in the direct sequels. But if these films continue to gross over a billion dollars at the box office, why would Cruise leave his character? Maybe he can achieve that goal so he doesn’t have to do the crazy stunts himself when he grows up. Director Christopher McQuarrie is once again side by side with Cruise in Dead Reckoning. This dynamic duo have been linked since Valkyrie and haven’t looked back since. His work on the Jack Reacher films and Mission Impossible proved to be quite successful. One curious difference is that this time writer Erik Jendresen was brought in to co-write the script. While Jenderson didn’t work on a Tom Cruise auction house, he did write the World War II series Band of Brothers II and the hilarious horror film Otis. Those two works are Note’s only recognizable appearances, which may explain the awkward, goofy dialog in the first part of Dead Reckoning. But in reality, most moviegoers aren’t sitting in a theater seat paying attention to Mission Impossible’s award-winning dialog and impressive effects. It’s all about Tom Cruise running at full speed, jumping off a mountain, and pulling a bad guy to safety at the end of the day to sweet chin music. And that’s exactly what the Dead Reckoning section offers.
This seventh installment brings a familiar face back into the game, forcing Ethan Hunt and his elite squad to question everything. Benjy and Luthor are still helping Hunt achieve his incredible track record, but they’re thrown off their usual path when the franchise’s newest villain shows up. This new threat is simply called Entity and is an artificial intelligence virus that can attack everything in real time, including satellites and computers, and can trigger a global nuclear war at any moment. In a renewed effort to keep the franchise under control, this forces the team to do everything possible to save the day with wits and power.
The film’s weaknesses are mainly in the dialogue, which contains sketch parodies at some points. There are moments when the characters take things too seriously, using a lot of technical jargon to explain how the technology works and what the parameters of the mission should be. Always a different character recites the same basic premise, but with Lemon’s words so silly that the audience can’t help but laugh and laugh out loud. But on the other hand, this is about the big action scenes, which are perfectly realised.
From the high-octane and somewhat ridiculous car chase to the impressive and high-tension train climax where Cruise pulls off one of the movie’s greatest stunts, Dead Reckoning multiplies those moments tenfold. There are funny masked revelations and some good emotional beats with some of the recurring characters. The film was shot at the height of the pandemic, so there are moments that feel awkward and not as cinematic as they could be, especially in the scenes where the actors exchange dialogue.
